Double Exposure, Take Three

Roddy McDowell, Roddy McDowall. William Morrow & Company, $65 (256pp) ISBN 978-0-688-10063-6

In his third volume of celebrity photographs, the film star, now also a professional photographer, once again pairs photos of each subject with comments by a well-known acquaintance. ``A grand old shoe,'' says Alice Faye of Don Ameche, and Lauren Bacall finds Alistairsp correct Cooke ``awe-inspiring.'' Similar kudos come from Stanley Kramer on Maximilian Schell (``unbelievable''), Ronald Reagan on Bob Hope (a ``master showman'') and Anne Bancroft on Patricia Neal (``a true gentlewoman''), to name a few. McDowall uses a variety of techniques--extreme close-up, highlighting, distortion, oversize settings--to characterize his 102 subjects, most often shown with the severely candid, unglamorous miens of ordinary people. Fans of the two earlier volumes will not be disappointed. (Oct.)
