The Race

Bob Judd. William Morrow & Company, $18 (238pp) ISBN 978-0-688-10463-4

Judd's ( Formula One ) latest entertaining foray once again tracks life in the fast lane. Forrest Evers, car racer extraordinaire, has just won the Monaco Grand Prix. The telegram he receives from his sponsor is not of a congratulatory nature, however; Evers has been fired. He learns from Ellie Channing, CEO of Women Unlimited, that the company has been swindled of $12 million by Channing's one-time associate Billy Fraser, who can now bring about the company's downfall. Evers, enamored of Channing, offers a deal: he will retrieve the money in exchange for his job. He manages to pull off his own swindle but becomes suspicious when Fraser suddenly suffers a stroke. Fraser's daughter seeks Evers's protection from those she believes have harmed her father. Though the resolution may be predictable, good characterization and sharp prose make this an enjoyable read.
