Oz: The Hundredth Anniversary Celebration

A century after the publication of L. Frank Baum's books, 30 artists and authors recall their earliest memories of the land of Oz in Oz: The Hundredth Anniversary Celebration, edited by Peter Glassman. Jerry Pinkney realistically portrays the Lion and briefly discusses the meaning of courage; a wordless spread shows Chris Van Allsburg's dramatic sepia picture of Dorothy's Kansas farmhouse tossed by the cyclone; Ann M. Martin describes her love affair with the books themselves, their design, the sound of the characters' names; Eric Carle shows the Very Hungry Caterpillar dressed up as the Tin Man. Other contributors include Jules Feiffer, Natalie Babbitt and Peter S s. Proceeds from book sales will be donated to Reading Is Fundamental.
