Food Hide and Sneak

Bastien Contraire. Phaidon, $9.95 (26p) ISBN 978-0-7148-7723-5

Contraire, designer and founder of indie publisher Papier Gaché, offers a sophisticated, primarily wordless book. Food and drinks are rendered in trichromatic shades of neon pink, bright green, and brown. Among each set of objects is one that—while deceptively similar in appearance—doesn’t belong with the others. In a spread devoted to types of fungi, for example, an umbrella and pail is the interloper. Incognito among pieces of cake, pie, and other baked goods is a pink duck inner tube; and a canoe hides among sandwiches. Contraire challenges readers to detect differences, while the arresting color combination lends the visual game particular panache. Ages 1–3. [em](Aug.) [/em]
