The Ultimate Bible Knowledge Challenge: A Collection of Bible History, Trivia, and Fun Facts

Stan Toler. Harvest House, $12.99 trade paper (176p) ISBN 978-0-7369-7416-5

Inspirational speaker Toler presents an entertaining, fact-filled condensation of Bible history and sayings in this book of memorable lists and questions. He begins with timelines of major biblical figures such as Abraham, Noah, and Jesus before paring down biblical learning and lessons into bullet-point lists: major characters throughout the Bible, biblical names for the Devil, key miracles performed by Jesus, and so on. In the second section of the book, Toler explains key words and phrases from the Bible that have made their way into everyday language: “to everything there is a season” comes from the book of Ecclesiastes; the “apple of my eye” can be found in Deuteronomy; and “burning the midnight oil” has its origins in Matthew 25. Toler also includes lists of essential Bible verses divided by theme, such as “the beginning,” “the plan of salvation,” and “instructions in Christian living,” which will be a great reference for those reading the Bible for the first time. The longest and most entertaining section contains over 200 multiple choice and true-false questions that test readers’ knowledge of the Bible. Although scholars might find it simplistic, Toler’s pleasurable book will serve as a fun introduction or refresher for anyone reading the Bible. (Oct.)
