What You Must Know About Dialysis: The Secrets to Surviving and Thriving on Dialysis

Rich Snyder, D.O. . SquareOne, $17.95 trade paper (208p) ISBN 978-0-7570-0349-3

Osteopathic physician and nephrologist Snyder (What You Must Know About Kidney Disease) arms patients with useful information to aid in coping with chronic kidney conditions that require dialysis or a kidney transplant. The book is filled with medical terminology that, while dense, will help patients better understand their treatment and results (such as how bloodwork is interpreted). Focusing primarily on controlling fluid intake and blood pressure, Snyder discusses a dietary regimen, diet supplements, and caring for emotional and spiritual as well as physical well-being. Snyder explains nutritional factors that he says will help individuals maintain a feeling of health. To draw the most benefit from dialysis, he emphasizes nutrition%E2%80%94not only limiting the amount and types of fluid intake (no caffeine or drinks sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, among others), but also reviews a host of supplements, such as vitamins D and K2, to combat fatigue, inflammation, and other physical issues. More detailed advice, such as weekly menus, would have been helpful. If readers are truly paying attention, moving forward will be much easier. Readers open to Rich's holistic body/mind/spirit approach will find helpful information and resources. (Sept.)
