Sandra A. McLanahan, David J. McLanahan, , preface by Bernie S. Siegel. . Kensington/Twin Streams, $35 (624pp) ISBN 978-0-7582-0201-7
Sandra McLanahan, a family physician specializing in alternative, complementary and integrative medicine and her brother, David McLanahan, an experienced general surgeon, have combined their knowledge to present a detailed, accessible overview of a variety of illnesses that may or may not be treated surgically. David contributes the surgical perspective for conditions that include many types of cancer, coronary artery disease, varicose veins, gallstones and hernias. In clear language, he describes the surgical techniques available, various anesthetics and preoperative tests. Sandra outlines alternative methods to surgery as well as ways to utilize complementary medical strategies that improve both body and mind when an operation is necessary. For example, she suggests the diet and exercise program established by Dean Ornish as a possible alternative to Coronary Bypass Surgery. In addition, she recommends lifestyle changes that may prevent future surgeries: avoiding tobacco and alcohol, maintaining a low-fat, high-fiber diet and following a program of stress management. This integrative approach is an excellent resource to those contemplating surgery. B&w illus.
