We Love Dinosaurs

Lucy Volpin. Nosy Crow, $16.99 (32p) ISBN 978-0-7636-9959-8

The title says it all: this is a book for dinosaur lovers. With upbeat rhymes and jewel-toned watercolors, debut author Volpin celebrates prehistoric creatures (“We love their spots and zigzags, too,/ their colors—yellow, red, and blue”). The usual dinos (triceratops, stegosaurus) are featured, as are the less familiar silvisaurus, minmi, and ouranosaurus. Regardless of type, all are equally friendly looking, with sweet, often toothless smiles and inquisitive expressions. Even the tyrannosaurus looks like it’s laughing when it roars, eyes crinkled shut and grin enormous. In addition to a few predictable rhymes (“tall/small”), Volpin provides some delightful lines that build toward a fitting concluding sentiment: “In fact, we really love them all!/ We’d only love them more, we think/ if somehow they weren’t all extinct.” Ages 2–5.
