Amusing Grace: Hilarity & Hope in the Everyday Calamity of Motherhood

Rhonda Rhea, B01. Life Journey, $10.99 (128pp) ISBN 978-0-7814-3532-1

With winning humor and a reckless sense of fun, Rhea, a mother of five, reflects on everything from ""life in the fast-food lane"" to ""socks, cellulite, and other mysteries."" This is not a deep theological book on parenting, though there are some surprising moments and biblical observations here. Nor is it a primer on what to do, what not to do, or (more to the point) how to repent when you've totally screwed up as a parent. Mostly, its purpose just seems to be to make mothers laugh, and that's a pretty lofty and noble goal. Rhea writes well about the lighter side of family frenzy, offering short chapters for moms on the go. It's a shame that the chapters don't relate a little better to one another; they skip around rather frenetically and don't lead logically from one to another. (In all fairness, though, what reader is looking for a sustained and thesis-driven book on the hilarity of motherhood?) Readers will delight in Rhea's casual, caustic approach, and will particularly relish her very funny take on the Proverbs 31 superwoman.
