Predator

Steven Walker. Pinnacle Books, $6.99 (341pp) ISBN 978-0-7860-2018-8

Walker's true-crime account of convicted serial killer and rapist Timothy Krajcir is not nearly as exciting as the title and dramatic cover suggest, told is a style lacking fluidity or finesse. Occasionally, Walker will quote Krajcir at the beginning of the chapter (""I have felt emotional about my victims at times, and I'm not the same person I was thirty-years ago...But I can't say for sure that I wouldn't do anything again.""), giving more insight into the killer's twisted mind than Walker's narrative. Walker fails to add any excitement or depth to a case that doesn't stand out for any particular reason, aside from Krajcir's successfully evading capture and conviction for his worst crimes for decades (in 2007, new DNA evidence in 2007 linked him to the murder of a college student). Die-hard true crime fans might want to tag along, but those looking to test the genre will be better off finding another starting point.
