SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI: A Life of Joy

Robert Francis Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Jr. Kennedy, , illus. by Dennis Nolan. . Hyperion, $18.99 (32pp) ISBN 978-0-7868-1875-4

The life of Francis, patron saint of animals, ecologists, Italy and zoos, among other things, has been well documented, both by his own hand and in the form of biographies by those who knew him. This latest exploration, Kennedy's first book for children, draws a particularly vibrant and warm picture of the medieval saint, who also serves as a namesake and patron saint for the author's family. The early days of "charming rogue Francis Bernadone," known for his lavish spending and crazy parties, are filled with fun and song, as well as a longing to be a knight "fearless and pure of heart." Readers observe as Francis's good-natured generosity becomes a mission, and he leaves behind all possessions for a life embracing poverty and his love of God. The deepening of Francis's faith and his commitment to spreading God's word gains him many followers (Franciscan friars, as well as sisters, such as Clare Scifi who becomes Saint Clare) who also want to serve others and commune with all of God's creation. In Kennedy's lively, well-paced story, Francis's joyful manner and unwavering devotion make him an understandably charismatic figure. Nolan's (Dinosaur Dream ) evocative oils whisk readers to the lush woods and hillsides of 13th-century Umbria. Portraits of Francis preaching to attentive animals will likely resonate with readers. An author's note containing Kennedy's personal connections to his subject, as well as a detailed historical timeline add layers of color and depth. Ages 4-8. (Mar.)
