The Beast or the Lamb: Discerning the Nature that Determines Your Destiny

Derek Prince. Chosen, $16.99 trade paper (224p) ISBN 978-0-8007-6253-7

This sensationalistic treatise, culled from unpublished writings by the late Bible teacher Prince (They Shall Expel Demons), explores scripture’s warnings about an impending ultimate confrontation between God and Satan. “The end-times battle will have two opposing sides: Christ against the Antichrist, true against false. It will be the Lamb against the Beast,” Prince contends, examining what the Book of Revelation has to say about these factions and how the battle will be waged and won. He begins with the beast, highlighting its “cunning” spirit and finding it embodied in the raging crowd that chose to crucify Jesus. By contrast, the lamb adopts the “pure, meek nature of Jesus” and does not retaliate even when attacked. Prince suggests that the way to win the battle is by emulating the self-sacrificial spirit of the lamb, illustrating this point by telling of how his recorded Bible lessons rose in popularity after he stepped back from overseeing their distribution. The dramatic narration outlines salvation history in extreme, Manichaean terms (“In the battle that will ensue, many saints will have to lay down their lives”), which will animate some readers while leaving others disappointed by the lack of nuance. This will satisfy Prince’s fans, but it’s unlikely to earn him any new ones. (June)
