The Book That Will Make You Love Books

Françoize Boucher. Walker, $12.99 paper (112p) ISBN 978-0-8027-3743-4

With the intensity of an infomercial host (and a similar knack for hyperbole), French author/illustrator Boucher makes a tongue-in-cheek case for why reading is good for one’s brain, body, and even modesty. “A book can save your dignity if someone barges into your room when you’re stark naked,” screams all-caps text on one page, while a scraggly cartoon boy and girl on the opposite page offer proof (helpfully, the girl has three books and three arms). Phosphorescent orange and teal accents play into the book’s manic mood as Boucher offers one dubious claim and wild scenario after another. While readers may suspect that reading won’t actually make them taller than the Eiffel Tower or turn them into instant ping-pong stars (thanks to the “magic vibes” books give off at night), they’ll certainly understand that books can be a lot of fun. Simultaneously available: How Cool Are Your Parents? (Or Not). Ages 10–14. (Mar.)
