Look Who's There!

Martine Perrin, trans. by Marianne Martens, Albert Whitman, $8.99 (16p) ISBN 978-0-8075-7676-2

In this striking hide-and-seek book, first published in France, die-cut pages conceal portions of abstractly designed animals rendered in bold contrasting colors. Call-and-response rhymes reveal their identities: " ‘Who's that hiding behind the big web?' asked the little bee. ‘I am!' said the spider. ‘Come play with me!' " One spread (printed in an almost unreadable green on fuchsia) inexplicably breaks form ("I see a green turtle hiding in the grass. And look on the other side... I see a lizard. Do you?") and the predatory relationship between several species sits oddly with their friendly banter—does the shark really just want to swim with the fish? But these quibbles aside, it remains a stylish presentation. Available simultaneously: What Do You See? Ages 3–up. (May)
