In these first-person narratives are heard the distinctive voices of men and women in religious life who have come to terms with their homosexual identities. The dawning of sexual self-awareness is often described as a journey that for some has reached a peaceful conclusion and for others is ongoing. In three sections devoted to ecclesial, personal and ministerial aspects, homosexuality among priests and brothers and lesbianism among women religious are explored in terms of the post-Vatican II enlightenment that changed the Catholic Church and the nature of communal religious life. As this study observes, ``it is clear that lesbian and gay persons are being called to religious life,'' yet, the number of religious communities claiming willingness to accept declared gays and lesbians ``is far greater than those actually accepting them.'' However, it is in the personal stories of homosexual priests and nuns of widely ranging ages that this anthology makes an impress. The issue is illuminated without stridency by 16 such men and women. Gramick, a nun, is co-editor of The Vatican and Homosexuality. (Sept.)
