Happy Birthday

This set of miniature picture books stars two fastidious, perpetually smiling rabbit brothers named Wesley and Wendell. Each of their adventures begins with a planning session--not a moment is wasted. A relaxing day at the beach includes swimming, looking for shells, a picnic, feeding the gulls, flying kites, building a castle, playing volleyball and sending a message in a bottle. Ireland's bright watercolors and humorous details add spark to lackluster texts that often read like a generic activities list. A delicate, flowery border surrounds each page, a device that frequently seems at odds with the subject matter. Wesley and Wendell lack the irreverent spontaneity and humor that children find appealing.
