LIFE ACCORDING TO JESUS: Wisdom for Living Each Day to the Fullest

Jack Graham, . . Tyndale, $12.99 (0pp) ISBN 978-0-8423-7466-8

Biblical precepts meet good sense in Graham's simple, to-the-point devotional, with 80 mini-chapters. As the senior pastor of a 21,000-member congregation in Plano, Tex., Graham (You Can Make a Difference ; Diamonds in the Dark ; A Hope and a Future ) offers his readers and radio listeners current-event commentary in conjunction with stories and lessons found in the Bible. In the book's five sections, Graham offers suggestions for recognizing God's active involvement in every area of life. Specifically, the author hails Jesus as the creator of life, breaker of chains, king of the world, lover of the soul and transformer of the heart. In one devotion, Graham shares the story of an unfairly maligned minister whose reputation suffers from his congregants' accusations. Thus Graham admonishes fellow Christians to endure wrongs patiently as John 19 commands, take care with their accusations and always honestly assess whether they are suffering due to their own ill choices. Graham discusses other pertinent life issues such as "walking the talk" (living in line with one's verbal assertions), finding lasting value from painful circumstances, recognizing work as a privilege and striving for an attitude of peace regardless of events. Graham's homespun style is certainly user-friendly, but readers will find little that is fresh here, and the book fails to incite any energetic soul-searching. (May)
