International Building Exhibition

Kleihues, Joseph Kleihues. Rizzoli International Publications, $45 (282pp) ISBN 978-0-8478-0775-8

The 500 drawings in this catalogue comprise a broad selection of prize-winning and commended projects submitted to the International Building Exhibition (IBA) Berlin for its program of urban development. The works shown, many of which will never be built, illustrate the complex problems of modern city development, particularly when there is no dominating architectural style. The leading world architects represented here, including Rossi, Botta, Hejduk and Eisenman, offer many differing designs, and it is only the theme city of Berlin that supplies unity to this collection. Kleihues, director of the IBA, and Klotz, director of the Museum of Architecture in Frankfurt, have succeeded in demonstrating the multiplicity of architecture styles and possibilities for their application to urban centers.
