Harrigan, who teaches journalism at the University of New Hampshire, chronicles the events of one random dayJune 4, 1986at the Boston Globe, in a book that should be required reading for journalism students. The author follows activities from 6 a.m. to midnight, moves from the publisher's office and advertising department to reporters (including foreign correspondents) covering stories, then to the copy desk, composing room, pressroom and distribution of the newspaper. Harrigan demonstrates an impressive familiarity with every job, even discusses interdepartmental frictions; her enthusiasm for newspaper work and those who perform it is infectious.
