Dark Side of Love C

Jane G. Goldberg. Jeremy P. Tarcher, $21.95 (306pp) ISBN 978-0-87477-716-1

In her instructive report on ``better ways to love,'' psychoanalyst Goldberg ( Deceits of the Mind ) argues that ``the key to a stronger love lies in our use of hate.'' Drawing on her professional experiences, her own relationships and those of family and friends, she examines how potentially destructive emotions coexist with even the most fulfilling love, and she stresses the importance of acknowledging those dark emotions. She correlates some of the vast research by Freud and other analysts with ancient mythology to validate the existence of hate, and concludes that the ability to recognize hate is an ``essential ingredient'' in the building of a ``strong psychological immune system.'' Of particular interest are the chapters devoted to the many aspects of narcissistic love and to Goldberg's discussion of the role of ``ghostly hate'' in the therapeutic relationship. Stimulating and useful. (Feb.)
