This curious volume, which presents 68 color reproductions of artworks depicting sporting activities, is the catalogue for the inaugural exhibition of the new National Art Museum of Sport in Indianapolis, of which Rhodes is the director. Because the works have been chosen by over 50 museum directors around the country, the book lacks a coherent vision. The collective theme, ``the close bond between art and sport,'' assuming phrase is a direct quote. IF not, drop quote marks and use dashes. aa feels forced. moved up sentence to follow similar thought. aa Still, most of the pieces are interesting, each accompanied by an appreciative statement or shorter: `a note by' ?aa/stet appreciative statement/pk / by the director who selected it. Many of the pieces are invigorating for the quintessential athleticism they portray. Several works by Thomas Eakins are shown, including the almost-graceful, homoerotic The Wrestlers. Also noteworthy are Alex Colville's remarkably realistic painting `painting,'? aa Skater and the Cubist sculpture Boxers by Alexander Archipenko.
