Few baseball lovers will dispute the contention of Dallas Morning News sportswriter Miller that the American League pennant race of 1967 was the most memorable ever. Four teams stayed in the battle for the flag throughout the season and into the last weeks; at a point all had identical records, prompting one of the best sports headlines of all time: ``Baseball Tie Is a Four-in-Hand.'' Finally, the weak-hitting Chicago team was mathematically eliminated and, on the season's last day, Boston edged out Detroit and Minnesota by one game, inspired by the astounding play of outfielder Carl Yastrzemski. If not a graceful writer, Miller is a dogged one, and his fact-packed account of the race is remarkably thorough. Photos not seen by PW. (July)
