Half Straight: My Secret Bisexual Life

Tom Smith. Prometheus Books, $37 (167pp) ISBN 978-0-87975-734-2

These confessions of a 65-year-old ``bisexual corporate executive,'' who has kept his homosexual encounters secret from his wife and children, will send many married women readers to the nearest pharmacy for condoms and to the yellow pages for a private detective. If ``Smith'' can be believed, a third of American husbands are having sex with one another. In copious detail he recounts his liaisons, gloating over encounters with All-American family men, such as a high school chum met again when he and his wife attended their class reunion, or the partner chanced upon in the country club pool. As depicted, his wife is from central casting; his illicit life is the main interest here. There are also discussions of homosexual activism and the author's Catholicism, and a chauvinistic look at sexual harrassment. ``Smith'' displays little worry over his upcoming cerebrovascular surgery to correct the results of his addiction to amyl nitrate, used to enhance sexual pleasure. Don't look here for intellectual stimulation. (May)
