Teddy's Bearzaar

Ted Menten. Running Press Book Publishers, $8.95 (91pp) ISBN 978-0-89471-637-9

This Harper's Bazaar parody, the 12th book Menten has written about teddy bears, laughs at how seriously the fashion and beauty industries take themselves. What makes the work especially delightful is its accomplished color photography and imaginative photo-styling. The teddy bears, each unique and apparently made expressly for this volume, are hilarious in poses for fitness workouts, as snooty sophisticates and as girl-next-door types. Designer fashions are carefully and faithfully re-created down to the large red bows adorning a black gown featured in the Yves Saint Bearent ad. And the text is an amusing send-up of women's magazines: the article ``Create Your Own Den of Love,'' for example, offers advice for building a ``bearricade between you and stress while learning to enjoy each other's companionship again.'' Those who enjoyed Ilene Hochberg's whimsical Dogue and its successors will welcome this charmer. (Dec.)
