City Limits: Images of Boston in Transition

Those who think of Boston only in terms of the Freedom Trail, the Public Gardens' swan boats and trendy Quincy Market at Fanueil Hall will find an entirely different city here, increasingly one of income disparities and a population that is 44% nonwhite. The four photographers who ""tramped through the neighborhoods of Boston'' capture the city's gritty diversity in evocative black-and-white images: a man and his small son (who aims a toy gun) walking in Charlestown past graffiti supporting the Irish Republican Army; Haitian soccer players at a night game in Mattapan. Although the photographs ably portray the tremendous vitality of Bostonians, the book offers no respite from dournesswith the notable exception of a shot that depicts nuns playing volleyball in Jamaica Plain.
