Christy's Chance

Christine DeVault. Network Press, $3.95 (69pp) ISBN 978-0-941816-33-5

Christy likes Eric. Eric likes marijuana. Eric wants Christy to like marijuana and to make a delivery for him. Through the course of this ""interactive adventure'' story, Christy must ask herself questions. Should she get into a car with Eric? Is she being used? With each path taken, Christy (and the reader) experiences the results of a particular decision. Negative results include perceptual difficulties, disillusionment, police involvement. Positive results yield Steve, a boy who really cares about Christy, not drugs. The come-ons are typical: ``You're not chicken, are you?'' and the action is wrapped in a thin plot about a movie being shot locally. Prepared by substance-abuse educators and ``pretested'' by preadolescents, this book and its companions (Danny's Dilemma, Serena's Secret) about tobacco and alcohol make for dialogue-filled, easy reading that is more likely to find a home in school collections than to be sought out by youngsters themselves. Ages 9-13. (September)
