Animal Squares: An Animal Picture and Rhyme Book for Imaginative Children

Gilson Henry, Author, Ronnie Hansen, Editor Purple Turtle Books $3.95 (24p) ISBN 978-0-943925-01-1
In this innovative picture book, the canvas is a computer-like space, and the artist's language is color and geometry. Various animals are portrayed along with a rhyming text that adds a sort of clumsy fun and playfulness to the visual experience. ""It's in the bowl where swims a fish./ It holds more water than any dish./ Fish are fine, they have no troubles./ They keep happy blowing bubbles.'' Some of the animals, like the rabbit and the hippo, are hardly recognizable and require a little guesswork from readers. But on the whole, this format works. Ages 3-6. (December)
