In the enjoyable second book about the owners of the New York Saints baseball team (after The Devil in Denim), Scott pairs co-owner Lucas Angelo, an enigmatic doctor, with feisty helicopter pilot Sara Charles. Sara’s trying valiantly to save her family’s helicopter chartering company when she meets Lucas, who hires her several times when his regular pilot is unavailable. Sara thinks he’s flat-out gorgeous, but she considers him far out of her league. Lucas is terrified of flying after being medevac’d out of a deadly accident while in college. But he trusts his no-nonsense pilot and wants to get to know her—in every sense of the word. After hiring Sara as the team’s helicopter pilot, Lucas sets out to win her heart, even if his snobbish, old-money family and Sara’s working-class Staten Island roots seem impossible to reconcile. Scott’s gift for storytelling and knack for creating sympathetic characters make this a first-rate contemporary. (Jan.)
