Christine Warren. St. Martin’s, $7.99 mass market (320p) ISBN 978-1-250-07737-0

Warren’s fourth Gargoyles novel (after Hard as a Rock), set in Boston, is a fervent tale of danger, geeky magic, and sexy sizzle, as an independent heroine and snarly hero tangle in love and war. Startled and confused by their first encounter, Kylie Kramer and Dag’s relationship is off to a rocky start. Smart-witted and sassy, hacker extraordinaire Kylie does not appreciate Dag’s domineering grumpy manner. She’s curious, however, as she recognizes some of his words from her investigation into her best friend Bran’s baffling death. Dag, a Guardian only brought to life when humanity is in danger, demands answers, especially why Kylie smells of magic. A call to Bran’s sister, Wynn, Warden to her own Guardian, explains the dire situation regarding the escalating attacks by the Darkness, and Kylie must use her magical cyber skills to get information on the Darkness’s upcoming plans. Fans will enjoy seeing favorite couples and how the series plot is moving along, as well as the modern use of hacking in a good-versus-evil scenario.
