Annabeth Albert. Carina, $7.99 mass market (352p) ISBN 978-1-335-00688-2

Albert’s capable but slow-moving first Frozen Hearts contemporary opens with Alaskan loner Griffin Barrett reluctantly agreeing to lead a tour group to scenic Denali. One of the guests, River Vale, is a blue-haired former supermodel who is determined to get the uptight Griffin to relax and have fun. As a rule, Griffin never picks up customers, but somehow, River proves irresistible—especially when the men share a room and a bed and have role-play sex. Mountain man Griffin, a former drinker, likes routine, while River, who has an eating disorder, thrives on spontaneity. Despite their different outlooks, they decide to continue their relationship after the trip ends. Though they spend perfect days together, neither man is good with relationships, and a rendezvous in Vancouver threatens to break them apart. Albert (Status Update) features some truly tender kisses and romantic moments, but also plays up River’s self-destructive tendencies and triggers. What makes Albert’s book resonate is the lovers’ realization they can be imperfect together. The story feels a little long, but it’s worth persevering. Agent: Deidre Knight, Knight Agency. (Apr.)
