Dead Rapunzel: A Loon Lake Mystery

Victoria Houston. Tyrus (F + W Media, dist.), $24.99 (208p) ISBN 978-1-4405-6848-0

Early in Houston’s satisfying 15th Loon Lake, Wis., mystery (after 2014’s Dead Lil’ Hustler), art enthusiast and wealthy widow Rudd Tomlinson walks out of the Grizzly Bear Café after her usual breakfast one cold March morning and is fatally hit by a logging truck. Though the horrified truck driver insists that Rudd was pushed into his path, police chief Lewellyn “Lew” Ferris and her boyfriend, retired dentist Doc Osborne, are doubtful, until a witness comes forward to support the driver’s claim. Suspects include Rudd’s estranged family members and her late husband’s former business partners. Might someone have wanted to disrupt plans for a pricey museum or cover up shady real estate deals? Filled with vivid descriptions of the region’s winter landscape and Lew’s favorite pastime (fly-fishing), as well as interesting and eccentric characters, this entry is a welcome addition to the series.
