Little Things

Nick Dyer, illus. by Kelly Pousette. Peter Pauper, $16.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-4413-2859-5

“My favorite things... are little things” says a child in a red dress—she favors the tiny objects in her pocket, the blueberries in her bowl, the insects that dart between blades of grass. But, she recognizes, size is largely a matter of viewpoint: a stuffed animal’s shadow can seem awfully big in the dark; an airplane, pint-size against the wide sky. Attending the diminutive can even “tell me where I’ve been, where I’m going, what’s nearby and what’s on its way.” Papercut art by Pousette creates a sense of multidimensionality and imagines the intricacies of a world populated with pleased kitties and dappled fawns. Small needn’t mean mere, Dyer’s meditation suggests, and final spreads show that a modest act of largesse can make all the difference. Ages 4–8. [em](Mar.) [/em]
