This Cowgirl Ain’t Kidding About the Potty

Sarah Glenn Fortson, illus. by Russ Cox. Peter Pauper, $16.99 (40p) ISBN 978-1-4413-3165-6

“Wearing her ten-gallon hat and her two-quart diaper,” Cowgirl A.K., who resembles Pippi Longstocking, has no interest in using the potty. When a school trip to a rodeo puts her face-to-face with her bronco-riding idol, however, she returns home only to discover that the selfie she snapped with the show’s star includes “diaper fringe” in plain sight. That discovery, paired with the realization that real cowgirls wear undies, is all the encouragement A.K. needs to pull on her bronco-bustin’ big-girl pants and wrangle her own “big white stallion”—the toilet. Though most school-age kids are toilet-trained, and scenes of A.K. with her puffy diaper–clad backside reading at a desk are humorously incongruous, Cox’s energetic scenes easily match Fortson’s snappy, rhythmic, ranch hand–inflected text and takeaway: “ain’t kiddin’... I got no time for diapers.” Ages 3–8. [em](Oct.) [/em]
