Birds of a Feather

Large flaps clue readers into the identities of the birds they conceal in this oversize companion to Out of Sight (2010). Giant silhouetted profiles of a cockatoo and emperor penguin appear in black against white flaps; underneath, full-color images of the birds appear with informative tidbits (“Emperor penguins are the largest of the 17 penguin species. They can stay underwater longer than any other bird”). On another spread, rounded flaps depicting bird wings are layered like feathers, with their respective birds identified on the reverse). Elsewhere, pop-up birds spring from beneath flaps that mimic their eggs, and a spread divided into sixths by flaps enables readers to mix-and-match avian features, exquisite corpse–style.
