Woolly Woofers: Over 20 Knitwear Designs for Dogs of All Shapes and Sizes

Debbie Bliss. Lark, $17.95 paper (144p) ISBN 978-1-4547-0912-1

British designer Bliss is an icon of knitting with her own yarn line, magazine, and more than a dozen full-length knitting pattern books to her name, but she has managed to keep it fresh and feisty for a volume of knitwear that's doggone good. Over 20 patterns, with punny titles like Sherlock Bones and Le Chien %C3%A0 la Mode, are easily adaptable for dogs of different shapes and sizes, and the instructions are clear and concise. Even with a glut of doggie-knitting books and patterns out there, her patterns look amazingly new and whimsical. They're enhanced by exceptionally fun photos of modeling pugs, French bulldogs, Airedales, and Scotties, plus the joyful illustrations by Jo Clark that are reminiscent of both Hilary Knight (Eloise) and Ludwig Bemelmans (Madeline). This is a truly rare thing among knitting books: a keeper even after the patterns are all knitted up and given away. (Mar.)
