Jingle Paws

Margaret Wise Brown, illus. by Alessandra Psacharopulo. Parragon, $7.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-4723-5064-0

Italian artist Psacharopulo’s soft, grainy illustrations accompany this previously unpublished Christmas story from Goodnight Moon author Brown. When Cat hears noises on Christmas Eve, he rushes to investigate. Meanwhile, a little white mouse watches, hidden on a branch of the Christmas tree. Down the chimney whooshes Jingle Paws, a dog with brown spots, floppy ears, and a bag full of “gifts for the pets:/ For the mouse, a ripe cheese,/ And cat’s favorite—catnip!/ (Though the toy made him sneeze!”). After eating treats left out on a plate, Jingle Paws “wagged his short tail—/ It was time to move on./ With a whoosh up the chimney/ And a woof, he was gone!” Any worries of potential cat-on-mouse violence are quickly put to rest in this gentle, straightforward holiday story. Ages 4–8. (Aug.)
