Zack

Mons Kallentoft and Markus Lutteman, trans. from the Swedish by Neil Smith. Washington Square/Bestler, $17 trade paper (480p) ISBN 978-1-4767-8813-5

Zack Herry, the emotionally damaged hero of this grim series launch from Kallentoft and journalist Lutteman, fell into police work after surviving a painful childhood. A drug abuser drawn to the Stockholm nightclub scene, Zack nonetheless tries to protect the innocent. During a weeklong investigation of a Turkish human trafficking ring, Zack and his police team fight to give the Thai women the Turks have forced into “massage parlor” prostitution some form of justice. The shattering violence is occasionally modulated by Zack’s attempts to forget who he is and what he has had to do. With its emphasis on action over character development, this exposé of Stockholm’s criminal underbelly falls short of the standard set by Kallentoft’s Malin Fors series (Spring Remains, etc.). Still, fans of Jo Nesbø’s Harry Hole will like what they find. [em]Agent: Joakim Hansson, Nordin Agency (Sweden). (Jan.) [/em]
