Heart of a Highland Warrior

Anita Clenney. Amazon/Montlake Romance, $12.95 trade paper (358p) ISBN 978-1-4778-1827-5

The third Highland Warrior paranormal (after 2011’s Embrace the Highland Warrior) brings the series to Montlake Romance after Clenney’s contractual dispute with original publisher Sourcebooks. Demon hunter Anna MacKinley, investigating shenanigans in the middle of the night, finds a hidden fortress and its prisoner, the time-traveling Highlander Tavis Connor. He left the 19th century and his own assigned demon to help his brother Faelan fight an ancient evil. After Tavis and Anna decide to distract a guard by engaging in distasteful sex that neither of them wants, they escape to reunite with the Connor clan, some of whom are Tavis’s descendants. The story bustles with demons, vampires, hybrid vampires, vampire demons, a mysterious cat, a wedding, pregnancies, family secrets, words like “bonny” and “bairn,” and even a rather low-key visit by the Archangel Michael. Fans will be pleased to see the series resurrected, but others will find this a confusing morass of names and backstory. Agent: Christine Witthohn, Book Cents Literary Agency. (June)
