The Devil’s Game

Sean Chercover. Amazon/Thomas & Mercer, $14.95 trade paper (348p) ISBN 978-1-4778-2866-3

This mildly entertaining follow-up to 2012’s The Trinity Game from Thriller Award–finalist Chercover finds former Vatican priest Daniel Byrne working for the Fleur-de-Lis Foundation, a secret organization locked in combat with the Council for World Peace, another secret organization, which is attempting to take over the world. Daniel is investigating the Trinity Phenomena, which allows ordinary persons to predict future events through Anomalous Information Transfer (AIT). The Council aims to round up hundreds of those who perform AIT so they can influence stock markets and manipulate countries around the globe. Readers should be prepared for such genre staples as underground black ops facilities, the threat of worldwide biological devastation, massive religious cults, and even a Pentagon superweapon. The action moves at a satisfying clip, though the various plots and subplots will strain the credulity of even the most ardent thriller fans. Agent: Dan Conaway, Writers House. (June)
