Places: The Journey of My Days, My Lives

Thaao Penghlis. Open Road Media, $13.99 trade paper (252p) ISBN 978-1-4976-6317-6

Penghlis, best known for his roles on Days of Our Lives and General Hospital, weaves a captivating memoir full of bucket list-worthy adventures, intriguing encounters, and a few drops of juicy gossip. Dividing his recollections into three segments, Penghlis begins by detailing his move from Australia to the United States and his pre-acting jobs, which included a stint at a New York gallery where he unexpectedly finds himself having tea with Jacqueline Kennedy. From there he moves to the behind-the-scenes drama of daytime soap operas, which often seems to dwarf the on-air antics. Finally, Penghlis details the places that have captivated his spirit. Acting as part tour guide, part history teacher, Penghlis details his extensive travels, bringing intimate insights on some of the world's most interesting locales. For the most part, Penghlis reveals his insider information with discretion, although a tale involving Omar Sharif seems to unnecessarily violate the actor's privacy. Written in vignettes, Penghlis is an adept and enthusiastic storyteller, and he certainly has inspiring stories to tell. (July)
