The Perfect Sofa

Fifi Kuo. Little Bee, $17.99 (32p) ISBN 978-1-4998-07424

Panda and Penguin are on a mission to find a new sofa after Panda notices some springs sticking out of their homey pink affair (“This one is too old”), but finding the perfect one proves tricky. At what appears to be a sofa store they view a chair too small for the both of them (Penguin sits atop Panda’s head, wings crossed), a Mondrian-like cubist couch so modern neither knows where to sit, and a lip-shaped settee that is far too expensive (“$9,999,999”). “We can’t find a sofa!” exclaims the frustrated Panda as the duo’s findings float in the background. Ready to give up, Panda and Penguin begrudgingly make their way home, where a little work with hammer and needle-and-thread reveal that the perfect sofa was not so difficult to attain. Brightly colored sofas illustrated in a bold, childlike style contrast the protagonists’ black and white bodies. Kuo (I Can Fly) captures the hilarious struggle of these two companions who, new sofa or no, are lucky to have one another.
