The Cookies & Cups Cookbook: 125+ Sweet & Savory Recipes Reminding You to Always Eat Dessert First

Shelly Jaronsky. Gallery, $23.99 (320p) ISBN 978-1-5011-0251-6

Jaronsky, the creator of the website Cookies & Cups, presents over 125 selections with sweets in the front. Her casual tone and concise recipes with numbered steps are inviting for those new to the kitchen. Readers won’t find recipes making use of kale or quinoa here, but with the author’s motto of “eat dessert first,” that’s not a surprise. Basics such as chocolate chip cookies and an all-butter pie dough are offset with her unique throw-caution-to-the-wind selections such as Junk Food Marshmallow Squares (complete with potato chips) and Fruity Pebbles Cake (which includes the popular cereal on top of creamy frosting). No-bake options, including chocolate-filled oat squares and mint chocolate bars, are great for easy cleanup. Sweets are the author’s forte; savory selections (presented in “Part Two: Did you Save Room For Dinner?”), such as fresh tomato pasta and chipotle-lime chicken chopped salad with creamy avocado dressing, fizzle a bit. This is a fun selection and one for which it’s probably best not to include nutritional breakdowns. Agent: Andrea Barzvi, Empire Literary. (Apr.)
