Esden’s entertaining third Northern Circle Coven fantasy (after Things She’s Seen) is a fast-paced adventure about the value of found families and embracing one’s true power. Chandler Parrish is still grieving the loss of her best friend when she is elected as high priestess of her coven. While juggling her new coven duties, Chandler discovers that her eight-year-old son, Peregrine, has the rare and dangerous gift of faery sight, and she knows he must have inherited it from the father she’s kept secret all these years. But when Peregrine’s half-brother on his father’s side is revealed to be in mortal peril, Chandler agrees to let Peregrine participate in a ritual to save his brother’s life. Meanwhile, Lionel, a nosy journalist who’s been poking around, proves to be more than first meets the eye. Esden’s winning combination of real pagan practices and supernatural witchcraft is as enjoyable as ever, and her characters remain powerful but grounded. Readers will be pleased with this quick, fun series installment. Agent: Pooja Menon, Kimberley Cameron & Assoc. (July)
