Walking with Shadows

Luke Romyn. CreateSpace, $17.99 ISBN 978-1-5304-2926-4

Bestselling author Jonas Drake is one of two survivors of a plane crash on a flight from Rio de Janeiro to New York City. The other is Jeremy, a 10-year-old boy. The self-absorbed Jonas must learn to tolerate the boy and find a way through the Columbian jungle, while escaping FARC guerillas, drug runners, and various threats from the natural world. Jonas tells Jeremy some of his own moralistic fairy tales to pass the time and quell the boy’s fears, and Jeremy believes in the fantastic protectors that Jonas conjures up. Romyn struggles with basic scene setting, and poor prose (“Thankfully, they were in the Amazon and not somewhere less climate.”) makes things worse, keeping this novel from living up to its intriguing premise.
