Picture Quilts

Joan Masters. Main Street Press, $22.5 (123pp) ISBN 978-1-55562-012-7

Even a veteran needleworker may initially shrink from the challenge posed by Master's skillful projects. But the British quilter's friendly approach and lucid directions quickly instill confidence as she instructs readers in the art of fashioning picture quilts on a sewing machine using the techniques of patchwork and applique. Excellent color photographs of Masters's creations serve as illustrations and inspirations. There are precise, complete data on crafting quilts small and large, with central motifs dramatic or homey. The former include a winged lion from the medieval Book of Kells manuscript, a Minoan woman and other exotica. Among familiar favorites are birds, flowers, a teapot and reminders of special occasions: opera glasses and program. Full-size patterns add value to an outstanding guide. Better Homes and Gardens Book Club, Historical Times Book Club and Museum Edition Quilting Series selections. (March 23)
