After a decade in rural Vermont, Conger, a refugee from Berkeley, Calif., is in residence in the small town of Dumster, not only as its chief medicine man but also as a chronicler of the ways in which he has been taught by his patients. With names like Fusswell, Sotwell and Sticklethwaite, these crusty and rugged individuals give the doctor pause as he attempts to practice modern medicine, and they counter with remedies that often work--inexplicably. With wry humor, Conger takes the reader on an inner journey; our arrival at our destination, the so-called quiet life of a country doctor, is postponed by the often engaging detours of the natives.
