Murder by Owl Light

California retirement-home residents Angela Benbow and Caledonia Wingate, flush from their sleuthing success in Murder in Gray and White, solve three murders in this enjoyable, meandering tale whose ending is more unlikely than unusual. Tuesday at owl light (dusk) proves to be a lethal time at Camden-sur-Mer. One week after the man who fills the soft-drink machine is found stabbed to death on the grounds, Rollo, the simple-minded gardener, is killed with his own shears. Then Mrs. Lena Gardner is cheeked in by her nephew Robbie. At a welcoming party given in her honor, Mrs. Gardener accuses Angela of stealing her antique broach, but Angela says she bought the pin at a jeweler's. Suave Robbie suggests Aunt Lena is often confused, an accusation that elicits the twosome's sympathy for the new resident. After Lena is found stabbed with her letter opener, Cal and Angela determine to find the murderer, especially since dashing policeman Martinez can use their help. Diverting but improbable. (Oct.)
