Dating Iron John and Other Pleasures: A Woman's Survival Guide for the '90s

Linda Sunshine. Carol Publishing Corporation, $16.95 (163pp) ISBN 978-1-55972-175-2

The man of the '70s was nauseatingly nurturing; the '80s brought in Rambo; the '90s, Iron John. So self-proclaimed dating expert Sunshine ( Women Who Date Too Much ) characterizes the dating pool for woman. In such essays as ``Gloria Steinem's Self-Esteem Make-over,'' and ``How to Satisfy a Woman 30% of the Time,'' she offers advice, anecdotes and quizzes that will trigger a reader's smirk. ``Grim Fairy Tales,'' modern-day versions of age-old stories, include ``The Princess and the PMS'' and ``Anita in Wonderland.'' Although occasionally clever and genuinely funny, much of the book is silly and only intermittently likely to lift the spirits of single women. Some of them may argue that Iron John has already disappeared and that the man of '90s is unidentified--or in hiding. (June)
