For All the Saints: Homilies for Saints' & Holy Days

Herbert O'Driscoll. Cowley Publications, $10.95 (147pp) ISBN 978-1-56101-111-7

O'Driscoll (Leap of the Deer, etc.) selects several Holy and Saints' Days and then tries to render each more lively by imagining the personalities of the various saints involved. In doing this, he also explains minor, confusing points of character as well (e.g., How could St. Paul seem so rigid and unforgiving throughout the New Testament while at the same time being the author of the first letter to the Corinthians, the theme of which is love at the center of all things? ). Those who have ever sat throughout the dry readings of the saints on holy days and/or those who have just always wanted to know and/or those with an appetite for more than is usually offered will enjoy O'Driscoll's imagination and creativity. After all, ``It may not be the actual truth, but it could have happened this way,'' is always heady stuff, especially on Holy Days. (Apr.)
