Seasoned by Salt: A Voyage in Search of the Caribbean

Jerry L. Mashaw, Anne U. MacClintock. Sheridan House, $26.95 (288pp) ISBN 978-1-57409-155-7

Husband-and-wife sailing team Mashaw and MacClintock recount the adventures of their year-long cruise from Connecticut to Grenada and back. Competent enough to handle every aspect of the trip, from sailing and navigation to engine maintenance and piloting issues, the authors did not wander into uncharted territory; they admit they read guides and histories covering the territories they crossed on their course. Yet their tale still contains some uncertainty; even in the best-planned trip problems naturally arise. Mashaw writes most of the text in the first-person, interspersing MacClintock's""Passage Notes"" throughout. It's an unusual format, but it works, allowing readers to get a dual perspective on the ins and outs of navigating a 38-foot sailboat through the Eastern seaboard to the Caribbean. The lackluster writing makes the account somewhat tedious at times, but sailors attempting a similar feat will enjoy it nonetheless. 20 line drawings, 2 maps.
